Teach, Practise, Apply

Your ideal phonics approach starts with our FREE lessons.

Explicit and systematic

Phonics Code introduces students to the essential skills required for fluent, confident reading and spelling. It follows a carefully structured scope and sequence that ensures skills are taught systematically, allowing students to master each one and apply it with accuracy and automaticity.

Get started today!

Lessons 1-79 are free to access and can be used as a core programme in the primary years or as targeted support for struggling readers at any level.

Lessons

  • Lessons introduce the letter-sounds systematically.
  • Guidance is provided within the lessons, creating a predictable, safe learning environment.
  • Lessons are based on an I do, we do, you do methodology, and include animated letter formation.
  • Especially empowering for dyslexic learners, who thrive when teaching is systematic, explicit, and responsive to their learning needs.

Decodable books

The perfect way to apply new knowledge of the letters and sounds.  Each letter/sound has its own lesson and each lesson has its own fully decodable book. All books have lists of heart/tricky words, comprehension questions, a sentence for dictation and matching worksheet.

Worksheets

  • Worksheets include handwriting practise and letter formation.
  • Each worksheet covers one new spelling  of a sound or suffix rule.
  • Each worksheet has a space for writing a sentence for dictation. The sentences for dictation are included in the lessons and books. Sound boxes (phoneme frames) scaffold the reader and build confidence along with spelling knowledge.

Scope and Sequence

Our Phonics Code progression is aligned to the Ready to Read Phonics Plus scope and sequence (NZ) and the Australian English Curriculum phonic and word knowledge strand: Foundation to Year 5. Lessons can be taught at a rate of 3 per week, with 1-2 days used for revision.

Beyond phonics - Lessons 199-263

Teaching suffixes and their accompanying spelling rules is crucial for enhancing grammar awareness, word recognition, spelling accuracy, and overall writing fluency. This approach enables students to understand how words are formed and how to correctly apply these changes. By learning common patterns such as the doubling rule (doubling final consonants) or the dropping rule (dropping silent 'e's), students receive essential reading support. These skills help them avoid many spelling pitfalls, naturally expand their vocabulary, and improve their ability to construct more complex and natural-sounding sentences.

Phonics Code provides all the necessary resources for children to build a complete understanding of language, not just how to sound out words. While especially effective for struggling readers and those with dyslexia, this comprehensive approach benefits all students by building a robust foundation for reading and writing.

Caters for all learners

Phonics Code is a structured literacy programme that fosters children’s phonemic awareness skills in preparation for high-quality phonic teaching. They learn how the alphabet works, arming them with the knowledge and skills they need to become fluent readers and confident spellers.

Multi-sensory approach, engages students visually, auditorily, and kinesthetically by using visual cues, auditory drills, and kinesthetic activities to reinforce the letters and sounds.

Phonics Code can also be used as a powerful catch-up programme for those with dyslexia, dysgraphia or ‘phonics gaps’. An emphasis on letter formation revision in early lessons and alternative spellings in later sessions provide the necessary repetition and scaffolding for these students.

Assessments of the letter-sounds, reading and spelling can be carried out every 10 weeks using the online tests and downloadable assessment spreadsheet.
